IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

Don't let your life be ruled by your bowels

What is IBS?
IBS is a very common problem in today's society, affecting 8-14% of the population on any given day, and is claimed to be one of the most common causes of lost time from work.
Incorrect dietary habits over the years can cause inflammation in the gut and a sensitivity to certain foods, along with an imbalance in the population of bacteria in the digestive system. IBS is exacerbated by stress, whilst the unpleasant symptoms are stressors in themselves.

What are the symptoms?
The familiar symptoms include intermittent constipation, diarrhoea, pain, abdominal bloating, flatulence and fatigue. These can be extremely distressing and disrupting to the sufferer's life.
Fortunately symptoms such as these respond well to nutritional intervention.

What can I do for you?

During your consultation I will seek to identify the causes of your IBS.
A personalised dietary programme along with appropriate supplements will aim to heal your digestive system and reduce susceptibility to adverse food reactions.
It may be necessary for you to avoid foods that are causing your particular problems. However, the long term aim of your programme would be to rebalance your system leading to an increased tolerance to a wider variety of foods.
It is often useful to take a probiotic, a supplement of beneficial bacteria that usually colonise the digestive tract and are commonly out of balance in cases of IBS. Often, this is accompanied by an overgrowth of candida, an opportunistic type of yeast, and appropriate measures will be taken to counteract this.
Sufferers of IBS often do not produce sufficient digestive enzymes leading to incomplete digestion of food. Plant based enzymes can be a useful addition to a sufferer's treatment programme.

A comprehensive digestive test or parasite analysis test can be useful for determining the balance of bacteria in the bowel as well as assessing bowel function.

DID YOU KNOW? Pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain which assists with protein digestion. Pineapple is also an excellent anti-inflammatory.
